Ani Difranco
Angela Maria Ani DiFranco, is a singer-songwriter and Canadian American. She's released over 20 albums. DiFranco categorizes her music under the terms folk-rock and alternative, but it also contains influences such as hip-hop, punk and jazz. A feminist icon widely recognized as Grammy recipient Ani DiFranco is considered to be the father of the DIY movement and is among the first artists to create her own record label in 1990. DiFranco has two daughters: Elizabeth (Ross), and Dante Americo DiFranco. They were introduced at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her mother hails from Montreal and her father has Italian heritage. Ani DiFranco wrote and sang 32 Flavors. This track is on her sixth studio album Not a Pretty Girl released in 1995. It was also featured on the soundtrack of the Canadian romantic comedy Better Than Chocolate, released in 1999. DiFranco apologized in 2013 when it became known that she was hosting the three-day event on the site of a Louisiana former plantation for slaves. The event was cancelled, but many (including the news media) did not think it was a sign of regret. DiFranco released a new apology days afterwards. While she is known as Little Peoplesinger, she has been in contact with a myriad of musicians and artists, from Pete Seeger through Chuck D up to Prince. New Orleans is her home.
